Sha’Carri Richardson beat by UT’s Julien Alfred in latest 100m rematch post-Paris Olympics

On a cool Friday night at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, Belgium, former Dallas Carter track star Sha’Carri Richardson looked to finish out a 2024 track season that saw her win her first Olympic medal with a bang.

Competing in the women’s 100m Diamond League Final, Richardson got off to what is now an unsurprisingly slow start out of the blocks, but she couldn’t close the gap on the world’s best sprinters and finished in a distant eighth place. Richardson ran 11.23 seconds and was well beaten by the Olympic champion in the women’s 100m and former Texas Longhorn standout Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia.

Friday night’s 11.23 seconds by Richardson marks her slowest 100m time this year by more than a quarter of a second and is a far cry from her 10.84-second winning performance just a week earlier in the Zurich Diamond League.

For Alfred, the Diamond League Final victory in Belgium caps off a historic season for the 23-year-old. When Alfred won Olympic gold this summer in Paris in the 100m, it was the first-ever Olympic medal won by Saint Lucia, and she added to her tally days later in the 200m with a silver. Alfred also won the World Indoor Championship in Glasgow, Scotland to begin her 2024 season in the women’s 60m.

The result on Friday night will likely be the final time we will see Richardson compete on the track in 2024, and it could be some time before we get to see her back on the track again. The Dallas native opened up two of her past three track seasons in late March, opting out of the indoor track season altogether.
