September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
For the twenty-fifth year, children who’ve battled cancer, and those who’ve lost that battle, were honored at the Rhode Island Statehouse this week.
“If you wanted to ever get a sense of what resilience and bravery looks like, there’s a lot of it in this room,” said Dr. Rishi Lulla, one of a team of doctors at Hasbro Children’s Hospital who treat young cancer patients.
“Your extraordinary personalities influence each person you meet while reminding us the importance of hope and love,” said Lisa Hainse, Executive Director of The Tomorrow Fund.
Hainse said it’s important to raise awareness about pediatric cancer, which remains under represented and underfunded.
It’s also about building up those who may feel beat down.
“We want to remind them that cancer does not define them. They define who they are,” she said.
The Tomorrow Fund, she said, is there every step of the way both emotionally and financially.
“Your life can change in a split second and the Tomorrow Fund is there to be the safety net while you’re going through this difficult journey,” said Hainse.
“It comes in the form of paying rent and mortgage, making sure the water’s still running, electrical bills, utility bills. We have camps. We do things for the siblings. We try to keep the family together as a whole while they’re battling this.”
Combined with the newest treatments, The Tomorrow Fund is hoping to give these kids many, many tomorrows.
It’s all about strength and their bravery and how they continue to endure,” said Hainse.
