Northern Lights’ shimmering display captured in photos

The Northern Lights as viewed Thursday night in Errol, N.H.

Faint cloud cover and pockets of smoky haze couldn’t keep out the spectacular view of the shimmering Northern Lights across the New England night sky Thursday.

Many night owls shared their striking images of the aurora borealis on social media, capturing the dancing display of colorful pink, purple, green and orange hues, mainly from New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, although the aurora was visible as far south as Massachusetts. A relatively strong K6 geomagnetic storm caused the Northern Lights to spread farther south than usual last night and into the overnight hours.

Although cloud cover and upper-level smoky haze from western wildfires were forecast to potentially block out the view, both were relatively isolated, allowing for some great glimpses of the aurora light show.

The chances of New Englanders seeing the Northern Lights this weekend, however, are rather slim due to a weakened geomagnetic storm moving the viewing line more north to the Canadian-US border.
