Massachusetts firefighters rappelled down the Green Monster, climbed the light towers, slid down ropes from the press box, and simulated rescues in the elevators at Fenway Park on Thursday as part of a joint technical rescue training event.
More than 100 firefighters from five technical rescue divisions in Boston and across the state and participated in the training, officials said.
“They practiced elevator rescues, high tower rescues, and high-level facade rescues,” said Colm Lydon, director of security and emergency services for the Red Sox. “So if you had a window washer downtown, or you had someone hanging out a window or on a ledge, they would test how to lower them or how to get up to them.”
A spokesperson for the Boston Fire Department said the training was designed to challenge the skills of first-responders in high-angle rescue scenarios.
“These multi-agency drills are vital for building relationships and fostering collaboration among different departments, which proves invaluable during large-scale emergency incidents,” the fire department said in a statement.
Lydon said the ballpark has hosted numerous public safety trainings in the past.
“We partner with public safety as much as we can so that as part of this region we can prepare for, respond to, and recover from any type of accident that can take place,” Lydon said. “We also like for them to have an opportunity to familiarize with the ballpark as well. So it supports firefighters regionally, but it also helps us locally.”
