Our new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll gives Iowans their first glimpse at how Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump match up in Iowa in advance of the November election after President Joe Biden bowed out following his calamitous debate.
The initial results from the September Iowa Poll will be published online first thing Sunday morning at DesMoinesRegister.com. Those results also will be published in print in the Des Moines Register on Sunday.

What else will be in the new Iowa Poll?
This month’s Iowa Poll will also gauge likely Iowa voters’ interests in a third-party candidate such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. or Libertarian Chase Oliver — and whether their minds are made up on which candidate they’re supporting for president. Although he has halted his campaign, Kennedy’s name will appear on the Iowa ballot.
The Iowa Poll also will reveal how enthusiastic Iowans are about their choice for president and how they feel about the coming election — from excitement to exhaustion to dread.
In addition, the poll will reveal Iowans’ opinions of the job performance of Biden, Harris, Gov. Kim Reynolds, Sens. Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley, state Attorney General Brenna Bird, state Auditor Rob Sand and the Iowa Supreme Court.
It also will measure Iowans’ feelings toward those public officials, along with Trump, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance and Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, and whether they believe the nation and Iowa are on the right track.

But wait, there’s more!
The Iowa Poll also will show whether likely Iowa voters in each of the state’s four congressional districts say they are more likely to vote for the Republican or Democratic candidate this fall.
And it will gauge whether they believe Trump or Harris are better equipped to handle an array of significant issues, including:
Immigration.Inflation.Abortion.The war between Israel and Hamas.Relations with China.The war between Russia and Ukraine.Housing prices.
In addition, it will measure whether Iowans believe Trump or Harris is a stronger candidate on several important traits:
Caring about people like them.Being more trustworthy.Bringing about real change.Successfully unifying the country.Keeping America secure.And winning the respect of world leaders.
Iowans also will tell us how they feel about several potential immigration policies, rating them from “critical” to “important” to “not that important.” The policies include:
Securing the border.Mass deportation of undocumented immigrants.Ending birthright citizenship for all babies born in the U.S.Creating a pathway to citizenship for all immigrants already in the country.Protecting children brought to the U.S. illegally from deportation, also known as Dreamers.
It will also measure whether Iowans feel they are better or worse off financially than four years ago.
How do Iowans feel about the ‘fetal heartbeat’ law?
Also, Iowans will share their opinion on whether abortion should be legal in all, some or no circumstances.
And, in the wake of Iowa’s newly enacted “fetal heartbeat” law, which bans abortion around the sixth week of pregnancy, Iowans will tell us whether they favor or oppose the new law.
