Jon Rahm, currently ranked 14th in the World Ranking, has signed up to play the ACCIONA Open de España presented by Madrid, which will take place at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid between September 26 and 29.
Jon Rahm, statements
A three-time winner of this tournament in the 2018, 2019 and 2022 editions, Rahm hopes to surpass Seve Ballesteros in the tally of victories in his relationship with the Open de España in modern history, coming close if possible to the record of Ángel de la Torre, who with five titles holds the record for most triumphs in the tournament, achieved in the early years of the 20th century, between 1916 and 1925.
Registration is the essential requirement to take part in the tournament, although the Basque player’s presence will not be confirmed until his third child is born, expected around that time. Jon intends to play this event no matter what, but it will all depend on how his wife Kelley’s pregnancy progresses.
Rahm could also play the Alfred Dunhill Championship on three Scottish courses the following week, including the French Open afterwards (at Le Golf National, where in July he collapsed on the last day and lost the Olympic tournament gold medal) and even the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters in Sotogrande, from October 17 to 20.
Rahm was crowned champion of the Spanish Open in 2022 with the lowest score in the history of the tournament: 259 strokes and -25, an absolute record. Thus, Rahm’s presence would be a huge incentive for fans who plan to go to the Madrid Country Club.
Jon Rahm Rodríguez (Barrica, Vizcaya, November 10, 1994) is a Spanish professional golfer,5 currently number 10 in the world. He was number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for sixty weeks, an absolute record as number one in said ranking.
He started as a professional in 2016, the year in which he participated in the United States Open, a tournament that he would win only five years later, on June 20, 2021; he is the first Spanish golfer to win this tournament.
In 2017 he was crowned champion of the San Diego Open, the Irish Open and the Dubai World Championship. On 19 July 2020 he won the Memorial Tournament (Ohio) and reached first place in the PGA world golf rankings, overtaking Rory McIlroy and thus becoming the twenty-fourth number one in history, the tenth European and the second Spaniard after Severiano Ballesteros.
In 2023 he was crowned champion of the Augusta Masters (the fourth Spaniard after Severiano Ballesteros, José María Olazábal and Sergio García) and won his second Ryder Cup (2018, 2023) with the European team.
