Two California restaurants were selected for a worldwide list of the top 50 pizza makers.

Tony’s Napoletana Pizza in San Francisco and Pizzeria Sei in Los Angeles were named in a guide to the best pizzerias in the world by the 50 Top Pizza website, a self-described independent online guide that evaluates pizzerias with anonymous inspections.

The San Francisco pizza maker was ranked No. 6 worldwide, while the Los Angeles restaurant was ranked No. 33.

How were the rankings determined?

The website states that rankings are determined through a survey conducted by “inspectors” who do not have any professional involvement with the food industry. They visit the pizzerias anonymously and pay the bill without revealing themselves. The guide’s writing is free, coordinated by curators, and without restrictions.

“50 Top Pizza is a large community for quality pizza in the world,” said Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere, website curators, in a joint statement. “A product like pizza has no limits and knows no boundaries because it is the most well-known and best-loved food in the entire world.”

According to the website, 29 countries are represented in the ranking. Italy has the most restaurants, with 41, followed by the United States with 15 pizzerias.

What style of pizza do the restaurants serve?

Tony’s is at 1570 Stockton St. in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. They serve American, Italian, Napoletana, California, Detroit, Coal Fired, Grandma, Sicilian, Pizza Romana, New York and St. Louis-styled pizzas. They also have gluten-free and plant-based, meatless vegan options.

A Sicilian styled pan pizza called La Regina was a gold cup winner of the world pizza championships in Parma, Italy in 2013. The $43 pie has soppressata picante, prosciutto di parma, avorio mozzarella, parmigiano, provolone and arugula.

Owner and Chef Tony Gemignani also owns ― and franchises ― the restaurant Slice House, which has numerous locations nationwide. It serves New York, Sicilian, Grandma, and Detroit-styled pizzas.

California locations include Burbank, Eastvale, Mountain View, San Leandro, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and others.

Pizzeria Sei is at 8781 W. Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles. They serve 12-inch Neapolitan-style pies that are cut into six pieces. On their menu they have margherita, diavola, marinara, napoletana, bianca and funghi pizzas.

The most expensive is the $27 Bismarck with fior di latte, prosciutto cotto, egg, pecorino, basil, truffle oil and sea salt.
