South Alabama’s Jamie Sheriff makes quick return to the NFL

On Sunday, Jamie Sheriff made his NFL debut. On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers waived the former South Alabama standout. And on Friday, the outside linebacker returned to the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad.

Sheriff started his improbable NFL journey with the Seahawks as an undrafted rookie. Despite turning heads with his preseason play, Sheriff was waived by Seattle on Aug. 27, when the Seahawks reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit.

Signing with Seattle’s practice squad might have been the next step intended by the team for Sheriff, but he didn’t make it through waivers. The Carolina Panthers claimed Sheriff for their active roster.

In his first NFL game, Sheriff was on the field for 17 defensive snaps and 11 special-teams plays on Sunday. But after getting blasted by the New Orleans Saints 47-10, the Panthers made a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday, including waiving Sheriff.

Sheriff returns to Seattle with one game of NFL experience. As a member of the practice squad, he can play for the Seahawks only if he is elevated to active status. Each NFL team can elevate two practice-squad members for each game, which makes them eligible to play.

A walk-on at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Sheriff came to South Alabama in 2020. An injury kept him sidelined in 2021 before Sheriff returned for two seasons with the Jaguars. In his final game for USA, Sheriff was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player in the Jaguars’ 59-10 victory over Eastern Michigan in the 68 Ventures Bowl on Dec. 23, 2023.

Sheriff attended the Seattle Seahawks’ rookie minicamp as a tryout player in May, but he didn’t join the NFL team until Aug. 6 after training camp had started.

In between, Sheriff delivered beer for Southern Beverage Company of Ridgeland, Mississippi.

Despite his late start, Sheriff was on the field for 118 defensive snaps and 28 special-teams plays in Seattle’s three preseason games in August. Sheriff posted seven tackles on defense, another tackle on special teams, three sacks and five quarterback hits in the preseason.
