My biggest key to the Badgers winning isn’t Phil Longo’s offense putting up 40 points. It’s the Badgers returning to their defensive form under Jim Leonhard. I’d argue the 2021 Badgers, with a program-best defense and poor offense, could have hung with an Alabama team like this. It did so with several of the top teams in the nation.
Mike Tressel and Fickell’s defense must eliminate Alabama’s big plays, both on the ground with Milroe and through the air to star true freshman Ryan Williams. It also must excel down-to-down and finally generate some pressure.
This is a big ask without Jake Chaney on the field for the first half. But the Fickell-Tressel defense needs a statement performance. It could be saving its best for this contest after showing little creativity, or dominance, during the first two weeks.
