Vermont high school football: CVU’s Orion Yates on rout of Essex
CVU quarterback Orion Yates tossed five touchdowns in RedHawks’ 52-13 dismantling of Essex on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024.
It’s only Week 3 of the 2024 Vermont high school football season, but there’s plenty of intrigue among the state’s 15 matchups.
Is Springfield a legitimate contender in Division III? We’ll find out Thursday night when the Cosmos square off against host Woodstock.
How about Rutland? Is Mike Norman’s club back in contention, one year after missing the playoffs for just the third time in three decades? Hosting Middlebury on Friday might be revealing.

Enjoy!
THURSDAY, SEPT. 12Springfield (2-0) at Woodstock (2-0)
Game time: 6 p.m.
▶ A week after beating three-time defending Division III champion Windsor, the Cosmos head to Woodstock, which is flying high after its out-of-state triumph over Peru (N.Y.).
FRIDAY, SEPT. 13Middlebury (2-0) at Rutland (2-0)
Game time: 7 p.m.
▶ This game might just be the game of the weekend. It’s battle between the No. 1 and No. 3 team in the Week 2 power rankings. Both teams have dominated their opponents cruising to victories with strong running backs. Tigers running back Avery Carl has gained 264 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns in his two games while Rutland’s star running back Jayden Graham has rushed for 213 yards and six touchdowns so far.
Burlington/South Burlington (2-0) at Essex (1-1)
Game time: 7 p.m.
▶ Burlington/South Burlington is undefeated through two games for the first time since the schools formed the cooperative program ahead of the 2018 season. The SeaWolves are off a thrilling comeback win over St. Johnsbury. Meanwhile, Essex looks to prove itself after everything went wrong for the Hornets against Champlain Valley.
Champlain Valley (2-0) at Colchester (2-0)
Game time: 4 p.m.
▶ Note the early start time (due to the detection of EEE in the Colchester area). While Colchester has pitched consecutive shutouts to open its season, the Lakers have a big assignment in figuring out how to contain a Redhawks’ aerial attack that was clicking on cylinders in Week 2 at Essex.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 14U-32 (1-1) at Lyndon (2-0)
Game time: 1 p.m.
▶ Lyndon is off to a great start having earned a narrow one-point win over Bellows Falls in Week 1 before rolling over Mount Mansfield in Week 2. U-32 had a rousing opening-night win at North Country but seeks a bounce back after Bellows Falls pulled away in Week 2.
Mount Abraham (2-0) vs. Rice (2-0)
Location: At South Burlington High School
Game time: 3 p.m.
▶ Mount Abraham will enter Week 3 well rested after playing Thursday night in Week 2. Running back Cole Gagnon and wide receiver Ryan Wright have impressed so far for the Eagles. Gagnon ran over Spaulding’s defense, racking up 160 yards and three touchdowns while Wright has caught 16 passes and scored three touchdowns. Rice quarterback and defensive back Dallas St. Peter has been a force on both sides of the ball. St. Peter has scored rushing and passing touchdowns as well as recovering turnovers for his team on defense.
