The merged firm will operate as Womble Bond Dickinson (US) and will focus on serving clients in fast-growing cities and creates a “powerhouse,” according to an email from the firm.

The merger enhances the combined practices’ capabilities in finance, intellectual property, real estate, complex litigation, corporate law and other fields.

Womble Bond Dickinson and a leading firm from the West and Southwest will merge on New Year’s Day, creating a practice with more than 1,300 lawyers and 37 offices across the United States and Great Britain.

The union brings together Lewis Roca, which has eight offices stretching across Colorado, Arizona, Nevada and California, with Womble Bond, which has offices in South Carolina in Charleston, Columbia and Greenville; in North Carolina in Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Greensboro, Research Triangle Park and Raleigh; and in Georgia, Virginia, the District of Columbia, California, Massachusetts and Texas. The firm also has eight offices in Great Britain.

Once merged, the firm will operate as Womble Bond Dickinson (US) and will be led by Merrick Benn as chairman and CEO and Kenneth Van Winkle as vice chairman, the release says.

Based on Womble Bond and Lewis Roca’s combined gross revenue of $742-plus million, the firm would have ranked 70th on the 2024 Am Law 100.

The union of the firms has an eye on serving clients involved in innovation and technological change.

“One of the first parallels that emerged between our two firms was a shared strategic vision for serving clients in fast-growing cities and innovation hubs,” Betty Temple, Womble Bond’s chairwoman and CEO, said in the release. “The combined firm’s platform will offer greater depth in these high-growth markets and beyond, empowering our attorneys to deliver sophisticated and multifaceted legal counsel to companies at the forefront of change and disruption.”

In addition, the combined firm will offer greater depth and breadth in practice fields such as finance, bankruptcy, restructuring, intellectual property, real estate, complex litigation, and corporate and securities.

“Bringing together our vast capabilities, resources, and experience is a rare opportunity to take both firms to new heights and chart a path for our ongoing success,” Van Winkle, who is now the managing partner of Lewis Roca, said in the release. “We could not be more excited about the many opportunities that lie ahead.”
