Apalachee High School shooting suspect, father appear in Georgia court
The suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting and his father appeared before a judge Friday morning.
In a heartfelt tribute to the lives lost at Apalachee High School last week, Apalachee junior Isaac Sanguma has channeled his grief and resilience into a rap song.
As a student at the school, Sanguma’s lyrics reflect his personal connection to the tragedy and the emotions that followed.
After posting the song, titled “Forever Irimie,” on TikTok, he ended his caption with “WE as students who survived really can’t do nothing but keep our heads up and pray and thank God for keeping us #ForeverIrimie.”
Math teacher Cristina Irimie was one of four shot and killed last week when a 14-year-old student opened fire inside the school. Sanguma posted a message underneath the song, detailing the first time he met Irimie and how their relationship grew into her being his favorite teacher.
“Man I wish I could go back and give her a hug,” he posted in the description. “I never thought that was going to be my last time seeing her smile and speaking to her.”
As of Thursday morning, the song had become viral with more than 1.1 million likes and nearly 10,000 comments on TikTok.
Sanguma’s lyrics for “Forever Irimie”
The song features powerful lines like, “Another mother lost her baby,” he sang referring to the students lives that were lost, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. “It could’ve been me, I’m glad the Lord saved me.”
Sanguma gives a nod to Irimie, and how she constantly pushed him to improve as a student.
“I won’t see Ms. Irimie for a while and I can’t cut this trauma…I know Ms. Irimie wants me to go harder,” he raps.
“I’m hurting for his daughters,” he said in grief for the other teacher’s death, Richard Aspinwall. “It’s crazy two little girls won’t grow up with a father.”
Sanguma proceeded to rap that school would not be the same. His heartfelt lyrics demonstrate his expression of emotion in healing and bringing people together in times of sorrow.
In an interview last week with CBS Morning News, Sanguma praised Irimie for her kindness as he struggled in her math class.
