September is Hunger Action Month and local food pantries are raising awareness about growing food insecurity.
HACAP Food Reservoir volunteers are sharing their stories throughout the month.
Miss Mission USA pageant winner and Iowa native Erica Ly spent five years working closely with Meals on Wheels before she was introduced to HACAP.
It’s an issue close to her heart, detailing how her her dad grew up living in poverty in Vietnam until the age of 12.
“As I grew up and I learn that story and I realized more about why my dad was so passion about food, I took a chance to look around in my own community and I could see that there was food insecurity everywhere it looks different for many different people and I feel like for most of us that don’t work around it daily you don’t realize how much of it is in your own community,” Ly said.
Ly says you can volunteer or donate at your local food pantry to help families that are battling food insecurity.
