George Kittle wears Brock Purdy’s Iowa State helmet after Iowa loss to Cyclones

Brock Purdy and George Kittle have their eyes set on leading the San Francisco 49ers back to the Super Bowl, after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs last year.

But that doesn’t mean old college rivalries are forgotten at the NFL level, something Purdy was sure to remind Kittle of on Wednesday.

The former Iowa State quarterback, days after the Cyclonesupset the Hawkeyes 20-19 on Saturday, collected on a bet with the former Iowa tight end: He had Kittle wear his old Cyclones helmet while addressing assembled media at his locker.

“Pretty quickly,” said Kittle when asked how long it took for Purdy to text him the score of Iowa State-Iowa. “He texted me the score instantly. I said, ‘Thank you, Brock. You ruined my whole weekend.'”

Wearing an Iowa State helmet sure seemed to hurt Kittle — figuratively and literally, as he said Purdy’s helmet was small for him.

The Cyclones overcame a 13-0 halftime deficit at Kinnick Stadium.

“I tried to put a dark visor on this (Purdy’s helmet), but Brock didn’t want me to,” Kittle said.

Kittle went on to say that if Iowa had won, Purdy would have had to wear Kittle’s Iowa helmet. (Following the Hawkeyes’ 2023 win vs. the Cyclones, Kittle had Purdy address media wearing the headgear of Herky the Hawk, Iowa’s costumed mascot):

Iowa State lost to Iowa so of course, George Kittle and Brock Purdy had a bet. Purdy, a man of his word, did it, sporting the Iowa Hawkeye on his head to start media today😂 #49erspic.twitter.com/1s3m9t5HaZ

With the win, Iowa State has taken two of the last three games in the Cy-Hawk Series against Iowa. The Hawkeyes still lead the all-time series record 47-24 despite Saturday’s loss.

Still, Purdy and Kittle were able to put their bet to the side for “Monday Night Football,” as the 49ers defeated the New York Jets 32-19 to open the 2024 NFL season. In the 49ers’ win, Purdy completed 19 of 29 passes for 231 yards while Kittle caught four catches for 40 yards on five targets.
