We’re already entering the third week of the girls volleyball season, but there have been quite a few standout performers. The Arizona Republic takes a look at who has stood out so far. Coaches provided input.
The Republic’s Top 10 volleyball players to start season
1. Teraya Sigler, Scottsdale Horizon, Sr.
The 6-foot-2 outside hitter, the reigning Arizona Republic Player of the Year, might be part of a rebuilding program after the Huskies captured the past three state titles. But what she has done during her team’s 2-3 start stands out. She already has 132 kills, including matches of 36 and 38 kills in back-to-back 3-2 losses to Sunrise Mountain and Millennium.
2. Hayden Conner, Tempe Corona del Sol, Jr.
The 6-3 middle blocker leads Arizona in hitting percentage at .541. That includes 166 kills, as the team has started 17-3, including tournaments.
3. Mary Hamann, Phoenix Veritas Prep, Jr.
The 6-2 Hamann with 212 kills, as the team has started 13-7. She has has double-digit kills in her last three matches.
4. Lily Rolfes, Sunrise Mountain, Jr.
The 5-11 setter is averaging 9.9 assists a match. She has made 255 assists to start the season. She also has 65 digs.
5. Mallory Murphy, Wickenburg, Jr.
In her team’s first three matches, she has 15 service aces and 25 kills. She’s been a calming and positive force on the team.
6. Kendall Omoruyi, Casteel, So.
She finished last week hitting at a .476 clip, which includes 30 kills. She also had four blocks playing a new position. Casteel faced Millennium, Gilbert and Xavier last week.
7. Zillah Wildblood-Crawford, Flagstaff Northland Prep, Jr.
In a 2-1 week, facing Arizona Lutheran, Tuba City and Valley Christian, she had 59 kills, five aces and 50 digs.
8. Brianna Pino, Maricopa, Sr.
The outside hitter had 21 kills, three errors and hit .450 in Monday’s match against Combs. She also had 13 digs. She’s been a solid six-rotation player since her freshman year and has a 4.0 GPA.
9. Lillie Duitsman, Gilbert Christian, So.
In a 3-1 win over Benjamin Franklin Queen Creek, she had 19 kills, five aces and 12 digs.
10. Havyn Lick, Phoenix Thunderbird, Sr.
The 5-9 Lick is averaging 18 kills in her team’s 3-2 start. She is chasing 1,000 career kills, a milestone she figures to reach by midseason.
