This Texas city is the most affordable US city to retire to, study shows. See full list

Would you choose to retire in Texas?

Few people would choose to retire to a city in the Lone Star State—though Texas cities didn’t rank high compared to those in other states, a recent study shows. WalletHub analyzed 182 U.S. cities across 45 key metrics related to retiree friendliness to find the cities where most Americans would like to retire.

Another WalletHub analysis ranked Texas 32nd among the best and worst states to retire to.

While the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) reports that about 68% of workers are somewhat confident that they’ll have enough money to retire comfortably, only around 21% are “very confident.” Three-quarters of current workers surveyed plan to retire at age 70 or older, if at all. In contrast, only 14% expect to do so before the age of 60. However, the experiences of those who have already retired suggest workers will retire earlier than planned.

Many current workers also say they expect to work for pay after retirement, but only 30% of current retirees have done so.

“It’s important to choose wisely when picking where to retire, as many retirees are on a fixed income,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said. “As a result, the best cities for retired people are those that minimize taxes and expenses, as well as have good opportunities for retirees to continue paid work for extra income, if they choose to do so. In addition, the top cities provide high-quality health care and offer plenty of enjoyable activities for retirees.”

The Lone Star State is attractive to many retirees due to its low cost of living, tax-friendly policies, and range of outdoor activities. These were a few of the metrics included in WalletHub’s analysis, along with quality of healthcare.

So, how did Texas cities measure up against those in other states? Here’s what the data reveals.

8 Texas cities rank in top 100 US cities to retire in

Although none were in the top 20, eight Texas cities did make the list of the 100 best U.S. cities to retire to. The full list of 182 cities features 16 in Texas.

Metrics measured in the analysis fell into four categories: affordability, activities, quality of life and healthcare. The total 182 cities included the 150 most populated cities in the U.S. as well as at least two of the most populated cities in each state.

Brownsville was found to be the most affordable of the cities in which to retire, though it ranked among the worst for activities. Four other Texas cities tied for 78th in affordability, and Laredo ranked last among all 182 cities for healthcare.
