The South offers plenty of opportunities for couples to unwind, relax, and reconnect with one another — whether you’re looking for a cozy mountain retreat, a small town full of charm, or a hidden coastal getaway. We’ve rounded up five Southern towns that make the perfect backdrop for your next romantic getaway: South Carolina’s Old 96 District; Franklin, KY; Abingdon, VA; Amelia Island, FL; and Asheville, NC.

South Carolina’s Old 96 District

Made up of five distinct counties — Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, and McCormick — South Carolina’s Old 96 District is an idyllic destination for couples. From romantic bed and breakfasts to movies under the stars, here are a few ideas for your weekend getaway.

To truly soak in the charm of the Old 96 District, book a stay at one of its unique bed and breakfasts. Standout options in Abbeville include Sharon Manor and Belmont Inn. Meanwhile, Azalea Inn in Edgefield is located on a working farm, making for a scenic weekend getaway.

As Greenwood’s only full-service boutique hotel, Inn on the Square is another popular place to stay. In addition to the beautifully appointed guest rooms, the hotel includes modern amenities and a full-service restaurant.

When you’re ready to start exploring, the Old 96 District offers fun for all types of travelers. For example, the archery range at Hickory Knob State Resort Park is the perfect afternoon activity for couples who share a love for outdoor recreation.

SB Tip: The range is appointment-only, so be sure to reserve your spot in advance!

Golfers will love spending a few hours at The Range at Cold Springs. Similar to Top Golf (but privately owned), the range offers 10 covered bays as well as a grass tee area.

Catch a double feature at 25 Drive-In in Greenwood to end your night. Home to three movie screens, the drive-in movie theater also offers a variety of delicious concessions.

For an upscale date-night meal, there are plenty of local restaurants to choose from, including Montague’s Restaurant, Old Edgefield Grille, and River Grille.

Franklin, KY

Described as “a small town with a big heart,” Franklin, KY, makes for a charming and fun-filled destination. Whether you’re a bourbon fan or want to explore a vibrant downtown area, here are some of the best things to do and see in the area!

A locally owned craft brewery with an intriguing history, Dueling Grounds Distillery is named after the site where actual duels took place in the 1800s. Today, you can visit the distillery to tour its facilities, sip on craft cocktails, or sample its legendary bourbon.

We recommend trying the Linkumpinch Bourbon, also named after a site where duels were fought. The double-pot distilled bourbon is aged four years in new white oak barrels and features notes of vanilla, citrus, corn, and pepper.
