Aces star A’ja Wilson on WNBA season, shoe line and more

Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson talks to Prince Grimes about her partnership with Gatorade, the current WNBA season and her new shoe line.

When former South Carolina women’s basketball star A’ja Wilson strolled through the tunnel of Gainbridge Fieldhouse in her all-white T-shirt Wednesday night ahead of the Las Vegas Aces matchup against the Indiana Fever, she was 11 points away from making WNBA history.

And she did.

With a pull-up mid-range jumper over former Gamecocks star Aliyah Boston, Wilson broke the record for most points scored in a single season. The Aces won 86-75 in Indianapolis, improving to 3-0 against the Fever this season.

Wilson finished with a game-high 27 points, 12 rebounds and two assists. She has scored 966 points this season.

“It’s a blessing,” Wilson said post-game. “It’s something that I don’t take for granted. We have some phenomenal players in this league, so for my name to be on this list is truly a blessing. I have to cut it to my teammates because I wouldn’t get the basketball without them. Them continuing to pour into me so I can pour into them goes a long way.”

Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd had held the previous record, scoring 939 points in 38 games last season.

Boston finished with six points, four assists and a team-high 10 rebounds. Boston fouled out with 1:02 remaining in the fourth period. Star rookie Caitlin Clark had 16 points.

The Aces (23-13) have clinched a playoff berth and currently hold the fourth seed. The Fever (19-18) kept the sixth seed.

The Aces will play the Fever again on Friday, back at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
