Hazy day ahead for Arizona due to smoke in southwest US

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A cooling trend begins today for Arizona. Today will still be hot with a Valley high of 109 degrees, but both morning and afternoon temperatures should begin to come down over the next week.

Look for sunny skies today with areas of haze and smoke across Arizona thanks to significant wildfires in Southern California. Winds will be particularly gusty in southwestern Arizona, with winds picking up tomorrow in the southcentral portions of the state, including Phoenix. Look for southwesterly winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour, with gusts between 25 and 35 miles per hour in the Valley on Thursday. High temperatures will be near 108 degrees.

The winds are being driven by a trough of low pressure moving across the Great Basin to the north of Arizona. A second trough this weekend and early next week will usher in even cooler air to the region. Look for highs near 102 on Saturday and 100 on Sunday. Double digits are likely early next week with temperatures dropping to the upper 90s on Monday and low 90s on Tuesday.

Tropical moisture is set to push into Arizona this weekend as well, bringing slight rain chances Saturday night through Monday. Thunderstorms are possible during this time frame as well.
