The incident involving the NFL star drew nationwide scrutiny and comment Sunday, which turned to outrage on Monday when Miami-Dade police released more than an hour of bodycam video from the incident.
Tyreek Hill’s handcuff incident with police from police body camera
Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill was stopped by police on his way to Hard Rock Stadium and ended up on the ground in handcuffs.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who seemingly comments on all things sports and culture, has remained silent on the national controversy over Sunday’s detainment of a Miami Dolphins star player.
The NFL star, Tyreek Hill, was stopped for a traffic infraction outside Hard Rock Stadium as he attempted to drive into the facility for the season’s opening game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hill ended up handcuffed and on the pavement before being issued a citation and allowed to enter the stadium.
The incident drew nationwide scrutiny and comment Sunday, which turned to outrage on Monday when Miami-Dade police released more than an hour of bodycam video from the incident. The footage shows the officers forcibly pulling Hill out of the vehicle and scolding him saying, “When we tell you to do something, you do it. You understand? You understand? Not what you want but what we want.”

Officers’ actions widely criticized, but get support from police groups
The actions of the police officers, as seen on the video, drew widespread condemnation.
The Dolphins issued a statement Monday that said: “We are saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed towards Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell and Jonnu Smith by police officers before yesterday’s game. It is both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility towards these players, yet it is also a reminder that not every situation like this ends in peace, as we are grateful this one did. ‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?’ is a question that will carry with resounding impact.”
The South Florida Police Benevolent Association, however, faulted Hill for not cooperating or obeying the officers who stopped him.
“Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on the scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground,” the statement read. “Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave.”
It added: “We would like to stress to the community to use this as an opportunity to remember that it is always best to obey lawful policy commands first and complain later.”
Trump courts police support with promise of funding, immunity from prosecution
The incident happened a day after Trump spoke at a gathering of the national Fraternal Order of Police, which endorsed the GOP nominee’s presidential bid.
Trump has assiduously courted police and first-responder support throughout his political career. In 2017, while he was president, Trump told police officers during a speech on Long Island “please don’t be too nice” in dealing with suspects.
“Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over, like, don’t hit their head and they’ve just killed somebody. Don’t hit their head. I said, you can take the hand away, OK?” Trump said.
During the speech this past weekend and on the campaign trail, Trump has noted how he provided police agencies across the country with military grade hardware during his first term in office. If he returns to the White House, Trump said he would make “a record investment in hiring, retention and training for police officers” and seek immunity from prosecution for police officers accused of wrongdoing.
“Mobs of criminals walk into stores and clean out thousands of dollars in merchandise with absolutely no fear of punishment because you’re not allowed to do your jobs,” Trump said.
Trump sharply criticized ‘kneel down’ protests
Trump, even as a political figure and former president, has been vocal about the nexus between sports and politics. He was sharply critical of the so-called “kneel down” protests during national anthem before NFL games.
During the speech to the Fraternal Order this past weekend, Trump delved into the matter of transgender athletes.
“Why would anybody say something sort of simple like, ‘We want men to play in women’s sports’? Why do they want, say, ‘We want men to play in women’s sports?’ Why was that?” Trump said. “Did you see the Olympics where they had two fighters, two transitioned fighters? They transitioned.”
