Why Ole Miss football featured Henry Parrish Jr. over Ulysses Bentley IV

Ole Miss football attempted 42 rushing plays during its 52-3 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday. They were not distributed evenly among the running backs at the top of the depth chart.

Senior Ulysses Bentley IV, listed on the depth chart as a co-starter with Henry Parrish Jr., got just five touches. Parrish Jr., meanwhile, had a career performance with 165 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries.

Why was Bentley limited to the third-most carries behind Parrish and junior running back Matt Jones, who got 11 attempts? Coach Lane Kiffin noted there was nothing in particular that Bentley did wrong.

“Hard to beat what Parrish did,” Kiffin said. “We wanted to get Matt more carries.”

Through two games, Bentley has 11 carries and is averaging 3.3 yards per carry. He trails Parrish Jr. (22 carries, 9.3 yards per carry) and Jones (14 carries, 7.1 yards per carry).

“I think we’ve got a lot of really good running backs,” Kiffin said. “I thought Parrish played really well and practiced really well so he started.”
