Vice President Harris edged former President Trump by 3 points in North Carolina in a survey released Tuesday, marking the latest gain for the vice president in the critical battleground state.
The from WRAL/Survey USA poll shows Harris leading Trump with 49 percent support to his 46 percent, while 5 percent said they were undecided. Less than 1 percent say they plan to choose a different candidate.
Pollsters noted President Biden’s exit from the presidential race may have been a key factor in Harris’s new lead. Before he withdrew from the race, Biden fell 1 point behind Trump — 44 percent to 45 percent — while 2 percent were considering a third-party candidate and 8 percent were undecided, per the survey.
It follows a series of polls showing Harris making gains in the Tar Heel State amid a surge in support following her entrance into the race in July. Surveys from other critical swing states also show a very close race between the two party nominees.
The nonpartisan group Cook Political Report shifted North Carolina’s presidential race from “lean Republican” to “toss up” last month in the wake of the vice president’s boost in support in the state.
Sabato’s Crystal Ball, a leading election forecaster, said it also moved North Carolina from a “leans Republican” column to a “toss-up” but said it was skeptical the Tar Heel State could turn blue for Harris. Biden notably did not win North Carolina against Trump in 2020.
Tuesday’s survey also found Harris ahead of Trump when it comes to favorability ratings. The vice president was seen favorably by 50 percent of likely voters and unfavorably by 46 percent, pollsters found. Meanwhile, 44 percent of likely voters saw Trump as favorable and 53 percent view him unfavorably.
Harris led the former president by 9 points among female voters, while Trump edged the Democratic nominee out by 3 points among men.
The gender gap between the two major party candidates has shifted since Harris’s entrance into the race, WRAL reported. In March, Trump led Biden by 14 points among men, while Biden led the former president by 4 points among women, the outlet said.
While Harris may be making gains among women, recent polling shows she may be losing men by a bigger margin in key swing states.
The survey comes ahead of Tuesday night’s presidential debate, during which Harris and the GOP nominee will square off for the first, and possibly only, showdown before the November election.
A polling index by The Hill/Decision Desk HQ shows Harris with a 3.2 percent lead over the former president nationally, 49.4 percent to 48.2 percent.
The SurveyUSA poll was conducted Sept. 4-7 among 900 North Carolina adults, including 771 registered voters. The poll reported a credibility interval of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
