Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) stressed that the investigation into the Biden family is far from over, even after the president’s son pleaded guilty to nine tax charges on Thursday.
Hunter Biden made a last-minute decision to enter an “open plea” last week, which involves pleading guilty without negotiating a deal with prosecutors, and faces up to 17 years in prison and $1.3 million in fines. Luna, a member of the House Oversight Committee, said the president’s son being guilty is “something we’ve known all along,” and that the prosecutors involved in this case showed the public this investigation was nonpartisan.
“But I want to remind people that just because he’s pleading guilty, doesn’t mean that our job stops,” Luna said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, guest-hosted by Jason Chaffetz. “Ultimately, this whole thing was that Hunter Biden was really the keystone in regards to the influence peddling that was really benefiting the now-sitting president, Joe Biden. And so I do believe that our actual delegation and our committee needs to actually put forward legislation to stop influence peddling at this magnitude.”
Luna added that it was “egregious” what happened amid Hunter Biden’s legal fight, saying that many media outlets went out of their way to defend the president’s son.
Hunter Biden’s sentencing hearing for his tax charges is set for Dec. 16.
House Republicans have spent months investigating the Biden family’s foreign business dealings, specifically dealings that occurred when President Joe Biden was serving as vice president for then-President Barack Obama. Last month, the House Oversight, Ways and Means, and Judiciary committees released a 291-page report that stated Biden committed impeachable offenses, including abuse of power, by mingling with his son Hunter’s and brother James’s foreign business partners during his vice presidency.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said in an interview that the Biden family would “finally” be held accountable for their business dealings. When asked why the House is continuing with its impeachment when Biden is not seeking reelection this November, Comer argued history needs to recognize Biden as “the most corrupt president in the history of America.”
Beyond his sentencing for his tax charges, Hunter Biden is also set to be sentenced for his gun conviction in November, for which he could face months in prison.
