Spanish utility company Iberdrola has secured a contract to construct a 791MW offshore wind farm, New England Wind 1, in the US.
The company gained the contract through its US subsidiary Avangrid. The new wind farm offshore Massachusetts will be situated to the south of the existing Vineyard Wind 1.
The New England Wind 1 project was previously called Park City Wind. Along with New England Wind 2, it will be part of a 1.87GW wind farm complex.
The project will power 400,000 homes and considerably reduce greenhouse gas production, offsetting emissions equivalent to removing 300,000 gasoline-based cars from the roads each year.
It will create 4,400 full-time equivalent jobs and inject $3bn into the local economy. This includes the development of a new marshalling port in Salem, Massachusetts, and a manufacturing facility for offshore wind components in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
With a power purchase agreement in place, construction of the New England Wind 1 will commence in 2025, with the wind farm fully operational by 2029.

Vineyard Wind 1 is the first large-scale offshore wind project in the US, which is currently under construction near Martha’s Vineyard.
Vineyard Wind 1 will supply electricity to 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts, create 3,600 jobs, save consumers $1.4bn over two decades and cut carbon emissions by over 1.6Mt per year.
Iberdrola’s UK subsidiary ScottishPower recently ecured two contracts for difference in the latest auction round, including for the East Anglia Two offshore wind farm. These contracts will provide 1GW of clean energy to more than one million homes.
As of the end of the first half of 2024, Iberdrola had 2.3GW offshore capacity installed. The company plans to expand its offshore capacity to 3GW by 2025 and 4.8GW by 2026 with significant global investments.
Its portfolio comprises Vineyard Wind I in the US, East Anglia One, Two and Three in the UK, Saint Brieuc in France, and three Baltic Sea parks: Wikinger, Baltic Eagle, and Windanker.
