Police continue to search for a gunman who shot at motorists on Interstate 75 in southeastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon, injuring at least seven people and hitting as many as a dozen vehicles.
Some injuries were described as severe, but no fatalities were reported. Vehicles on both sides of the interstate were hit, causing a crash, police said. Five persons were shot and two others were hurt in a car crash.
Police identified Joseph Couch, 32, of Knox County, Kentucky, as the shooting suspect. Officers said the suspect fired an AR-15 from a cliff at drivers near Exit 49 on the freeway. Police believe he acted alone.
A motive is not known, but Couch was reported to have sent his ex-wife a text that said “I’m going to kill a lot of people,” about 30 minutes before the shooting began.
That’s according to affidavits from police that were reviewed and reported by the Lexington Herald Leader.
As the search entered its third day Monday, police warned local residents to stay alert, saying Couch could still be in the area, including the Daniel Boone National Forest. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Here is what we know so far:
Where are police searching for shooting suspect?
