Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman on the blame game after NIU loss
Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman says ‘entire program underachieved’ in 16-14 home loss to Northern Illinois on Sept. 7, 2024 in South Bend, Ind.
SOUTH BEND — On the day after its stunning home defeat against unranked Northern Illinois, Notre Dame football suffered another tumble Sunday in the latest college football rankings.
Marcus Freeman’s third Irish edition plummeted 12 spots in the US LBM Coaches Poll when it was released Sunday. Now ranked No. 19, Notre Dame had held steady at No. 7 after a season-opening road win over then No. 20 Texas A&M.
No other program dropped as far as Notre Dame in this week’s coaches poll, although Michigan dropped seven spots to No. 16 after a one-sided home loss against third-ranked Texas.
Notre Dame fell 13 spots to No. 18 in the Associated Press poll of media members. Notre Dame had climbed to No. 5 in that survey after its 23-13 win over the Aggies.
Analysis: Elko Hangover Effect might have bitten Notre Dame football again vs. NIU
Notre Dame travels to face in-state rival Purdue on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Just two future Irish opponents this fall remain in the Top 25 of the coaches poll: No. 11 USC and No. 21 Louisville.
