Pennsylvania amusement parks honored as among best in the world

ELYSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — A few Pennsylvania amusement parks received high accolades this weekend in the 2024 Golden Ticket Awards.

Dutch Wonderland near Lancaster won Best Family Park for the fifth time, and Knoebels Amusement Resort near Elysburg said one of their signature wooden roller coasters and their food were recognized as #1 in the Golden Ticket Awards.

The annual awards are presented by industry publication Amusement Today and have been awarded since 1998.

Knoebels’ Phoenix roller coaster was named best wooden roller coaster for the sixth time.

For the 21st time in 24 years, Knoebels also topped the best food category.

“We are honored Phoenix has received this distinction for a sixth consecutive year,” said Dick Knoebel, president of Knoebels Amusement Resort. “It is no small feat to maintain wooden roller coasters the way our team does. Seeing guests’ excitement as they exit the ride – some of whom will hop right back in line to ride again – is what keeps us motivated to continue this meticulous care.”

“We recognized the ever-increasing effort our industry puts into food and beverage offerings, so my family challenged our team to create new, exciting additions to the award-winning tastes of Knoebels,” said Brian Knoebel, 4th generation Knoebel family member. “Rarely am I at a loss for words, but I found myself speechless when I learned they introduced 40 brand new menu items.”

The awards, Knoebels said, are calculated from an international poll. The survey is sent to a database of experienced and well-traveled amusement park fans asking them to rate the “best of the best” in the industry.

The awards were presented at another well-known Pennsylvania amusement park: Kennywood.

History of Dutch Wonderland

Kennywood is considered to be one of the finest traditional amusement parks in America and has been open for 125 years.

Two Kennywood coasters were recognized in the top 25 — Jack Rabbit at 17th and Thunderbolt at 21st.

Hersheypark’s Lightning Racer came in at 20th.

Kennywood’s Phantom’s Revenge was also recognized among the best steel coasters at 15th.
