Five takeaways from Vols’ win versus North Carolina State

Tennessee (2-0) continued its 2024 college football season on Saturday in Week 2. The Vols recorded a, 51-10, win versus North Carolina State in a top 25 US LBM Coaches Poll matchup at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

72,730 were in attendance for the Duke’s Mayo Classic.

“Good team win right there,” fourth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said. “Excited about the way the football team came out and performed.”

Tennessee totaled 460 yards to North Carolina State’s 143 in the contest. The Wolfpack recorded three turnovers to Tennessee’s two.

Two Vols made their first career starts for Tennessee against the Wolfpack. Junior defensive lineman Joshua Josephs started at LEO, while junior Holden Staes started at tight end.

Jospehs totaled two tackles and one tackle for a loss, while Staes recorded one reception for 18 yards. He was targeted once.

Tennessee totaled 249 rushing yards against North Carolina State, the 25th game under Heupel the Vols recorded 200-plus rushing yards. Tennessee is 23-2 when rushing for 200-plus yards under Heupel, including winning 17 contests in a row.

Tennessee scored 50 points for the 12th time under Heupel as head coach since 2021. The Vols also scored 69 points in Week 1 versus Chattanooga.

Under Heupel, Tennessee’s tight ends have accounted for 24 touchdowns (19 receiving, five rushing). Miles Kitselman and Holden Staes each recorded one receiving touchdown against North Carolina State.

Win against a ranked team

Saturday’s win was Tennessee’s highest margin of victory against a ranked opponent away from home since defeating No. 18 Auburn, 42-0, on the road in 1980.
