The Giants are kicking off the 2024 season in style … kind of.

New York is one of the many NFL teams unveiling new uniforms for this year. While there are no changes to their primary jerseys, the team is bringing an alternate option to celebrate its 100th season in the NFL.

Those throwbacks are being debuted right away. The Giants host the Vikings in Week 1 at MetLife Stadium, and broke out the new uniforms Sunday.

Giants new uniforms, explained

The Giants unveiled their new “Century Red” uniforms back in May. The 2024 campaign marks the 100th season for the franchise, as the team first began back in 1925

Below is a look at the uniform, per the Giants’ official X account:

The uniforms are an mashup of three different uniforms from New York’s history, per the team. The red and blue striped jersey is modeled after the Giants’ 1933 uniforms. According to the club, the 1933 season was “an important year not just for the Giants but the league as a whole. That season reached a crescendo with the first ever NFL Championship Game, which was played between the Giants and Bears at Wrigley Field in Chicago.”

The pants and socks come from their 1925 uniforms, the inaugural season of the franchise.

To top it off, the helmet is based on the one the team wore in 1938. The original was a single-strap, leatherhead-style helmet with no facemask, which greatly differs from the current headgear worn in today’s NFL. The only true similarly between the two is the striped blue and red appearance of the helmet.

“I feel like it’s gritty and vintage,” Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke said when the jerseys were first revealed. “It’s a throwback to the 1920s, 1930s when they were out there just getting grimy. It’s a testament to all the guys who played before. They paved the way for us to play this great game.”

Reactions to Giants new uniforms

It’s safe to say there are more haters than lovers when it comes to the Giants uniforms.

With the jerseys finally getting into game action on Sunday, fans had quite a bit to say about the throwbacks. Some drew parallels between the new uniforms and old jerseys worn by the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens.

Giants can’t be wearing g these jerseys for Week 1, that’s a mid season throwback
