Bangor Has Officially Become Maine’s Very First ‘Bee City’ in USA

This is the first time I’ve heard of a “Bee City,” so I had to learn more and share it with you. Plus, it’s exciting that it will be the first of its kind in the entire United States. Let’s dive in.

We all know how important bees are to the environment, so anything to help this species from going extinct is vital to society.

Okay, so get this, Greg Edwards is the secretary and treasurer of Bangor Beautiful.

This non-profit led the effort to get Bangor certified as a “Bee City USA”. Bangor Beautiful helps to make the city look visually appealing, according to WABI.

Greg said in the WABI article, “One of the benefits is right in our name—it will make our city more beautiful.”

Becoming a Bee City involves passing a city council resolution which took place this summer, as per the post.

This means Bangor will use fewer pesticides, promote learning about pollen, and focusing on creating habitats for these essential bees to stay, according to the news station. Well, I think that’s fantastic!

There are so many people who are supporting the stabilization of honey bees. People like Rob Jarvis who is the Head Golf Pro at Bangor Muni. Rob is a bee advocate.

According to the article, the Bangor Muni golf course now has about 30,000 honeybees. That’s a lot of bees!

Rob also told WABI that, “People tell me they’ve noticed more honeybees in their gardens since we started the colonies.”

But it’s not just bees that Bangor is looking out for because apparently, 40% of all pollinators include other insects like moths, butterflies, and more, according to WABI.

This is a monumental and historic step by Bangor, Maine, in protecting our planet.
