Special teams dooms Hogs in loss to Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. — Arkansas football couldn’t finish off No. 17 Oklahoma State on Saturday, blowing a 14-point lead and losing 39-31 in double overtime despite out-gaining the Cowboys 648-395.

Three turnovers and two missed field goals proved costly as the Razorbacks fell short of what would have been a statement victory early in the season. Ollie Gordon II only had 49 yards rushing on 17 carries, but he scored the game-winning touchdown on a 12-yard run in the second overtime period after both teams missed field goals during the first extra session.

Arkansas looked dominant in the first half, but a pick-six kept Oklahoma State afloat. The Hogs’ offense couldn’t get rolling on the scoreboard across the final 30 minutes, and the Cowboys took full advantage.

Here are our grades from the Razorbacks’ 39-31 double-overtime loss to Oklahoma State.

Offense: B

Arkansas got off to an electric start, but a sluggish second half doomed the Hogs. The running game is definitely improved from last year, as Arkansas racked up 232 yards on the ground. Taylen Green threw for 416 yards.

Defense: B

Oklahoma State didn’t score an offensive touchdown until the fourth quarter, but the Cowboys broke loose in the final period. Still, the Arkansas defense did enough to win this game, and that unit was let down by turnovers and other miscues.

Special teams: D-

Isaiah Sategna muffed a punt and made a poor decision running out a kick return, and Kyle Ramsey missed two key field goals in the fourth quarter and overtime. Devin Bale looked strong on punts, and Ramsey did make a game-tying field goal at the end of regulation to avoid an ‘F’ grade.

Coaching: C

What an afternoon for Sam Pittman, who was so close to a win that turned the tide on the narrative engulfing his Arkansas tenure. Instead, it was another one-possession loss.

Overall: C

Arkansas should have won this game, and it’s almost inexplicable how the Hogs lost. This one could sting for the rest of the season.
