Some fall color starting to show up across western Massachusetts

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – While most of the trees are still looking pretty green, we’re starting to see some splashes of color showing up on some of them.

“Like the tree behind us they’re changing a little bit. I’m not sure if they’re changing a little bit because of the heat we had during the summer or what,” said Ken Parsons of Chicopee.

The weather we have during the year can have an impact on the fall color. According to Climate Central, fall temperatures have increased by 2.4 °F on average across the U.S. since 1970.
Warmer autumn temperatures can lead to later and shorter peak fall foliage periods.

Abundant summer rain can cause later, brighter color. Too much rain can stress trees and cause the leaves to change and drop early.

There is still some time before we really know how this fall season may turn out and people 22News talked to are looking forward to the change of seasons.

“I like fall you can go see the leaves change and go for a ride and do some apple picking and stuff I think it’s great,” said Ken Parsons.

We can usually expect to see peak color here in western Massachusetts around Columbus Day.

The official start of fall, or the autumnal equinox, arrives on Sunday, September 22nd at 8:43 a.m.
