Austal USA honors last ship of its kind at keel laying ceremony

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A crowd gathered at Austal USA today for a navy ship’s keel laying ceremony, which will be the last of its kind.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was joined by Congressman Jerry Carl and Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro among several others for the ceremony.

Governor Whitmer wore gloves and a helmet as she inscribed her signature into the vessel.

She said she was honored to be chosen as the ship’s sponsor.

The Honorable Del Toro said the construction of this ship has created more jobs for Mobile and will be an asset to our nation’s security.

Vice President of Business Development at Austal Larry Ryder told us about the ship’s unique medical capabilities.

“The last three ships of this class—14,15 and 16—have an enhanced medical capability,” he said. “So in addition to the ability to transport people and their equipment, it has the ability to treat casualties and transport them to follow on care.”

Ryder said it will take three years until this ship is delivered.

He also shared that Austal has some big announcements coming in the future.
