Hurricane forecasters monitor Gulf, Atlantic systems |

An area of low pressure will likely merge with a front over the Gulf of Mexico after two systems forecasters were watching in the Atlantic Ocean dissipated, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The system teetering along the edge of Gulf states brought showers and thunderstorms to Louisiana Thursday and are expected to continue throughout Friday, hurricane forecasters said. Significant development is unlikely due to upper-level winds that are expected to stunt further formation of the disturbance.

The system will likely merge with another frontal system Friday or Saturday while showering the area.

The chance of the disturbance developing within two days or a week is 10%.

Two systems that were in the Atlantic Thursday have since dissipated, but a new trough of low pressure had developed Friday morning

Eastern tropical Atlantic system

Hurricane forecasters have spotted a new area of low pressure over the eastern tropical Atlantic that is producing minimal showers and thunderstorms.

If there is any development, it should be slow as the disturbance churns in the same area through early next week. Hurricane forecasters expect it to move west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic midweek.

The system has nearly a 0% chance of developing in a couple of days and a 10% chance of forming in a week.

Northwestern Atlantic system

A low pressure system with strong winds is located a few hundred miles east of the Mid-Atlantic coast.

The disturbance is producing showers and thunderstorms that are progressively taking on a “non-tropical structure,” hurricane forecasters said. The likelihood of the disturbance developing subtropical qualities is low as it approaches cold waters Friday evening and overnight. During this time, the low will be moving north-northeastward at 10 to 15 mph offshore the northern United States.

Hurricane forecasters said that the system has a 20% chance of developing in the next two days and in the next week.

Caribbean Sea wave

A tropical wave is producing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms near the coast of Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

Hurricane forecasters expect the wave to move across Central America and southeastern Mexico by Friday evening. Some slow development is possible over the weekend once the system approaches the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

The wave has nearly a 0% chance of developing in two days and a 20% chance of developing in the next week.
