Top 10 Alabama football leading passers during Nick Saban era

Top 10 Alabama football leading passers during Nick Saban era

Under head coach Nick Saban, the Alabama Crimson Tide football program has a significant amount of success from 2007-23.

In all, the Crimson Tide won a total of six national championships under Saban, as well as posted other noteworthy marks that included a combined 206-29 record, nine SEC championships, and four Heisman Trophy winners.

As you’d expect with those totals, the Crimson Tide were certainly not lacking for talent during the Saban era either, with quarterback in particular being a position where Alabama saw strong play from 2007-23.

A group that included multiple Heisman finalists, here are the Top 10 leading passers during Saban’s time at Alabama, starting with No. 10.

10

Jalen Milroe (2021-23)

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Stats: 64.2 CMP%, 3,172 passing yards, 29:9 TD:INT ratio from 2021-23

Alabama’s starting quarterback at the time of writing, Milroe’s 2024 season is not factored into this list as it is not during the Saban era, but his 2021-23 seasons are. Over this three-year stretch, Milroe was a starter during the 2023 season in which he finished sixth in voting for the Heisman Trophy.

9

Jake Coker (2014-15)

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Stats: 66.6 CMP%, 3,513 passing yards, 25:8 TD:INT ratio from 2014-15

Coker, a Florida State transfer, played for two seasons at Alabama from 2014-15 after previously beginning his collegiate career in Tallahassee. Coker’s time in Tuscaloosa included one season as a starter in which he led Alabama to the 2015 national championship.

8

Blake Sims (2011-14)

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Stats: 64 CMP%, 3,731 passing yards, 30:10 TD:INT ratio from 2011-14

A two-time national champion at Alabama in 2011-12, Sims was a member of the Crimson Tide for four seasons from 2011-14. However, Sims started only one of those in 2014.

Stats: 56.3 CMP%, 5,119 passing yards, 28:20 TD:INT ratio from 2007-08

Wilson – a four-year player at Alabama from 2005-08, as well as a three-year starter from 2006-08 – is a bit lower on this list than you might expect from the Crimson Tide’s third all-time leading passer, which is due to the fact that only his 2007-08 seasons under Saban were factored into this list. The first quarterback for Saban at Alabama, Wilson led the Crimson Tide to a combined 19-8 record as the starter in 2007-08.

6

Jalen Hurts (2016-18)

John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

Stats: 63 CMP%, 5,626 passing yards, 48:12 TD:INT ratio from 2016-18

Hurts began his Alabama career as a true freshman starter in 2016, and held that spot through the conclusion of the 2017 season before serving as a backup in 2018. Sitting No. 10 on Alabama’s all-time passing list, Hurts also won one national championship with the Crimson Tide in 2017.

5

Greg McElroy (2007-10)

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Stats: 66.3 CMP%, 5,691 passing yards, 39:10 TD:INT ratio from 2007-10

McElroy, who ranks No. 8 on Alabama’s all-time passing list, was a two-year starter in Tuscaloosa from 2009-10. The four-year player at Alabama also won Saban’s first national championship with the Crimson Tide in 2009.

Stats: 74.3 CMP%, 6,126 passing yards, 56:7 TD:INT ratio from 2018-20

A one-time national champion at Alabama, Jones, who ranks sixth on the Crimson Tide’s all-time passing list, owns one of the greatest seasons that the program has ever seen at the position. In his lone season at Alabama as a starter, Jones finished third in Heisman Trophy voting in 2020 while leading the Crimson Tide to the national championship.

3

Tua Tagovailoa (2017-19)

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Stats: 69.3 CMP%, 7,442 passing yards, 87:11 TD:INT ratio from 2017-19

Tagovailoa ranks as Alabama’s fourth all-time leading passer, and was a two-year starter for the Crimson Tide in 2018-19. At Alabama, Tagovailoa was also a one-time national champion during the 2017 season, and finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2018.

2

Bryce Young (2020-22)

Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

Stats: 65.8 CMP%, 8,356 passing yards, 80:12 TD:INT ratio from 2020-22

Young is the lone Alabama quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy, taking home college football’s top individual honor during the 2021 season. A two-year starter at Alabama in 2021-22, Young was also a one-time national champion with the Crimson Tide in 2020, and ranked second among the all-time passing leaders with the program.

1

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Stats: 66.9 CMP%, 9,019 passing yards, 77:15 TD:INT ratio from 2010-13

McCarron’s career at Alabama was headlined by two national championships in 2011 and 2012, as well as finishing second in Heisman Trophy voting during the 2013 campaign.
