Indiana high school football predictions Week 3 Indy-area IHSAA games

We are clicking right along. It is Week 3 of the high school football season already. I was 28-10 on predictions last week (I’m sure I would have won all of the non-completed games, of course) to drop to 63-20 (75.9%) on the season.

Here are the predictions on all of the Central Indiana games this week (kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday unless noted):

Brownsburg (2-0) at Franklin Central (1-0): Brownsburg jumped up three spots to No. 3 in the latest USA TODAY Network state poll for Class 6A after a decisive 30-14 victory over Cathedral. Junior Avin Robinson (12 catches, 217 yards, two TDs through first two games) is off to a fast start for the Bulldogs, who are playing both senior Iosua Stephens and sophomore Oscar Frye at quarterback. Franklin Central had a “no contest” game Friday after the weather delay. The Flashes trailed Roncalli 13-10 at halftime. Brownsburg is 6-0 against Franklin Central since the Flashes joined the Hoosier Crossroads Conference in 2018 with none of the games closer than a 14-point margin. Brownsburg 31, Franklin Central 14.

‘We still got places to go.’ Brownsburg good starts don’t matter much if it can’t finish.

Preps insider Kyle Neddenriep previews the third week matchup of Bishop Hamilton Southeastern versus Avon.

Hamilton Southeastern (2-0) at Avon (1-1): Avon rolled the dice after Bryce Reynolds’ 1-yard touchdown run in overtime, deciding to go for the win over Ben Davis. It worked. Jace Cameron’s play-action pass to Kaven Tislow in the back of the end zone for a 29-28 overtime win. The Orioles intercepted three passes and Jeshua Miller returned a punt for a touchdown to help spring the upset of the 6A No. 8 Giants. Chandler Weston threw for three touchdowns and the 6A No. 5 Royals ran for 297 yards in a 49-26 victory over North Central. HSE has won four in a row in the series. HSE 31, Avon 23.

Preps insider Kyle Neddenriep previews the third week matchup of Bishop Chatard versus Roncalli.

Bishop Chatard (2-0) at Roncalli (1-0): Class 4A second-ranked Chatard jumped out to a 28-7 halftime lead on Hanover Central, which turned out to be the final score after the game was called due to the lightning. It ended a 24-game regular season winning streak for Hanover Central, which scored its lone TD on a kickoff return. Jack Harrington was 12-for-16 passing for 162 yards and three TDs. Is Roncalli ready to compete with its old rival? The Royals won three in a row in the series before losing last year’s Week 3 game, 14-7. Roncalli led Franklin Central 13-10 at halftime last week, but the game was declared a no contest. The Royals would love nothing more than to end Chatard’s 24-game winning streak. Bishop Chatard 24, Roncalli 20.

Preps insider Kyle Neddenriep previews the third week matchup of Whiteland versus Decatur Central.

Whiteland (1-0) at Decatur Central (0-1): Both of these Mid-State Conference teams were locked in good games against quality nonconference opponents Friday and were unable to resume Saturday. Class 5A No. 2 Whiteland was tied 14-14 with Kokomo, while No. 6 Decatur Central was tied 21-21 with 4A top-ranked New Palestine. Whiteland won last year’s Week 3 game 31-15, but Decatur Central returned the favor with a 41-7 win in the regional. Bo Polston and the Hawks’ offense picked it up against New Palestine before the storms arrived. Whiteland’s Slate Valentine ran for 256 yards in the opening week against Jeffersonville. Decatur Central 28, Whiteland 21.

Preps insider Kyle Neddenriep previews the third week matchup of Ben Davis versus Pike.

Ben Davis (0-2) at Pike (2-0): This game looks much scarier now for Ben Davis than it did a few weeks ago, especially with a stretch of games following this of 6A No. 6 Center Grove, No. 4 Warren Central, No. 9 Lawrence North and No. 8 Carmel. Yikes. Pike is riding a big wave of momentum after wins over Zionsville and Fishers, the latter a dramatic 35-34 win on Saturday capped by Dohnavin Ward’s touchdown pass to Latrell Morton with 26.8 seconds remaining. Chase Shurn ran for 238 yards and a TD against the Tigers as Pike put up 495 yards of total offense. Ben Davis beat Pike twice last year by a combined 115-0. Ben Davis 32, Pike 26.

Zionsville (1-1) at Westfield (2-0): Class 6A No. 1 Westfield has passed the test in close wins over No. 6 Center Grove (34-28) and No. 8 Carmel (17-13) the first two weeks. Senior Gabe Aramboles has 15 catches for 253 yards and two TDs, including a big 79-yard TD last week in the win over Carmel. Zionsville had some theatrics of its own in a 46-40 victory over Lawrence Central, scoring on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Zachary Trent to Eugene Hilton on fourth down with 26.6 seconds left. Hilton, a Wisconsin commit, already has five TD receptions through two weeks. The Shamrocks have an 11-game winning streak in this series. Westfield 34, Zionsville 20.

Greenfield-Central (2-0) at Mt. Vernon (0-2): Class 4A sixth-ranked Greenfield-Central has not been tested at all through two weeks. Mt. Vernon dropped games on the road at Noblesville and Franklin. Which path better prepares these teams for the Hoosier Heritage Conference opener? Joliba Brogan ran for 151 yards and a score in Mt. Vernon’s 21-20 loss to Franklin. The past two meetings between these teams have been high-scoring shootouts, each program winning one (Greenfield-Central won 41-35 last year). Greenfield-Central 39, Mt. Vernon 33.

Warren Central (2-0) at North Central (0-2): Can 6A No. 4 Warren Central keep its scoreless streak going? In two games against Fort Wayne Snider and Warsaw, the Warriors have 21 tackles for loss, five interceptions, three sacks and one fumble recovery. Kendall Garnett ran for 99 yards and two TDs for Warren in last week’s 34-0 win over Warsaw. North Central’s passing game has put up huge numbers through two weeks. Caleb Foor threw for 377 yards and four TDs last week in a 49-26 loss to Hamilton Southeastern. Warren Central 36, North Central 14.

Noblesville (2-0) at Fishers (1-1): This will be one of the more intriguing games of the night. Noblesville is 2-0 for the fourth consecutive year but has not been 3-0 since 1998. The Millers overwhelmed Mt. Vernon and Homestead by averaging 422 rushing yards in those two wins. Brody Gump has 282 yards and three TDs. Fishers was susceptible to the run last week in a 35-34 loss to Pike, allowing Shurn to go over 200 yards. Fishers does have big-play ability on offense. JonAnthony Hall already has 24 catches for 332 yards and four TDs. Noblesville 34, Fishers 32.

Carmel (1-1) at Centerville, Ohio (1-1): Centerville, the alma mater of former Ohio State quarterback and ESPN broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit, lost 34-10 last week to Cincinnati St. Xavier, led by Herbstreit’s son, Chase. Class 6A eighth-ranked Carmel is coming off a hard-fought 17-13 loss to No. 1 Westfield. The Greyhounds showed some good things in that game, including Jacob Bellin catching eight passes for 103 yards and Nate Williams scoring on a 43-yard pass from Anthony Coellner. Centerville offensive tackle Kuol Kuol is a Purdue commit. Carmel 21, Centerville 20.

Center Grove (1-1) at Louisville Trinity (2-0): Class 6A No. 6 Center Grove rebounded from the season-opening loss to Westfield with a 28-14 win over Carroll (Fort Wayne), though the Trojans lost their south goal post when the bleachers were overturned by a gust of wind and crashed into the post. Center Grove quarterback Gabe McWilliams is 28-for-42 passing for 408 yards and four TDs through two weeks. Trinity, which lost 34-7 last season to Center Grove, is Kentucky’s top 6A team. The Shamrocks, coming off a 23-13 win over Frederick Douglass, have a strong sophomore class. Center Grove 31, Trinity 27.

Cathedral (1-1) at Cincinnati St. Xavier (1-1): Cathedral dropped to No. 7 in the 6A poll after a 30-14 loss to Brownsburg. Chase Herbstreit has thrown for 180 yards and a TD and rushed for 179 yards and two TDs through two weeks for St. Xavier, which lost 17-13 to Lakota West in Week 1 and rebounded with a 34-10 win over Centerville last week. St. Xavier 23, Cathedral 17.

Heritage Christian (2-0) at Guerin Catholic (2-0): Class 3A No. 4 Guerin Catholic picked up another good win last week, 35-31, over Lebanon. Malcolm Houze was 19-for-34 passing for 259 yards and three TDs for the Golden Eagles. Heritage Christian bumped up one spot to No. 9 in Class 2A after a 42-21 win over Scecina. Guerin Catholic has two wins in a row in this series. Guerin Catholic 31, Heritage Christian 21.

Lutheran (2-0) at Triton Central (1-1): Class 2A top-ranked Lutheran has won five in a row in this series and 45 straight games overall. Sophomore Braylon Ridner ran for 182 yards in Lutheran’s 34-12 win over South Putnam on Friday. After a close loss to 3A fifth-ranked Batesville in Week 1, 2A No. 6 Triton Central defeated Hamilton Heights 17-14 in overtime in Week 2. Colton Crawford had eight tackles and a pair of sacks in the win. Lutheran 28, Triton Central 16.

Mooresville (1-1) at Plainfield (2-0): Terre Haute North’s 36-32 win over Mooresville was one of the more surprising scores of last week. It ended the Patriots’ 14-game losing streak. Class 5A No. 5 Plainfield notched an impressive 24-9 win over Harrison (West Lafayette) as Luke Starnes ran for 256 yards and three TDs on 29 carries. The Quakers beat the Pioneers last year for the first time since 2017. Plainfield 35, Mooresville 28.

Martinsville (2-0) at Greenwood (1-1): Class 4A No. 7 Martinsville rallied in the final minute, scoring a touchdown with 18 seconds remaining for an impressive 41-35 win over Bloomington South. Senior quarterback A.J. Reynolds (438 passing yards, six TDs) and senior receiver Hunter Stroud (18 catches, 219 yards, four TDs) are one of the top duos in the area. Greenwood is coming off a stunning rally for a 41-35 victory over Indian Creek. Gunner Ruppert ran for 241 yards and three TDs on 27 carries. Martinsville 42, Greenwood 26.

Danville (1-1) at Lebanon (1-1): Danville knocked off Purdue Poly 27-0 in a game that was called off at halftime. The Warriors put up 232 yards in one half.
