Biden draws criticism after speech, with several saying slurring has gotten worse

PITTSBURGH (TND) — President Joe Biden has made at least a few public appearances so far this week, with one in particular sparking chatter on social media about his speaking abilities.

More than a few critics said he sounded as if he slurred his words when delivering recent speeches, adding that it’s gotten worse since he withdrew from his White House reelection bid following a less than stellar debate with former President Donald Trump earlier this summer.

Biden, 81, joined Vice President Kamala Harris in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Monday. He addressed a crowd of union workers alongside Harris in celebration of Labor Day.

During his speech, he spoke clearly at some points, but he slurred his words through multiple parts of the address. He also stuttered often, misspoke, and mispronounced words.

“Whatever they are shooting Joe Biden up with is not working,” Cash Loren, a conservative talk show host, wrote on X in reply to a video of Biden at the event. “They might as well send him back to the beach.”

Others shared similar sentiments.

“I see his vacation on the beach didn’t do him well. Just think how everyone, including Kamala, lied about his cognitive issues. He ruined our country just so they could have power! Imagine what else they would do, like try to assassinate someone!”

Another user seemed concerned for Biden, as well as the nation.

“One more year and he’ll be non-verbal. We’re on steep decline.”

It’s not the first time Biden has raised eyebrows for blunders amid speeches. When Biden delivered his State of the Union Address in March, Trump took to social media to question why Biden was clearing his throat and coughing so much.

“Don’t shake his hand, he’s been coughing into it the entire night!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform, as Biden headed into the crowd after his speech and greeted guests and members of Congress.

Trump, at the time, also alleged that camera operators panned off Biden as he continued to cough.

“See, as he’s getting ready to cough yet again into his right hand, the fake news media rushes him off the screen!” Trump wrote.

Trump has been one of Biden’s harshest critics. When the two political rivals debated in June, Biden mumbled more than once, with Trump calling him out on it by telling moderators he was confident Biden had no idea what he was talking about.

Trump, 78, is running for his second term in the White House.

Biden, meanwhile, called Harris the only “rational” choice for president in November. He said choosing her to be vice president was the “single best” decision of his presidency and told union members electing her will be “the best decision you will ever make.”

“She has a backbone like a ramrod, and she has the moral compass of a saint,” he said. “This woman knows what she’s doing.”
