GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man is dead after a gun battle with Glendale police officers following a standoff on Wednesday afternoon.
The standoff happened in the area of 56th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.
Glendale Police spokesperson Jose Miguel Santiago said the situation started when the 37-year-old man, later identified as Karl Komorowski, showed up unannounced at a home near 56th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, where a woman who has an order of protection against him lives.
The woman, who also had a child inside the house, told several neighbors about what was happening, and they called the police.
Santiago said Komorowski was inside the home when the woman and child escaped. He was armed and threatening to hurt himself and officers while refusing to come out of the house, Santiago said.

Glendale officers negotiated to attempt to peacefully get Komorowski out of the home. During the negotiations, Komorowski refused to leave them home and shot at officers several times, Santiago said.
SWAT teams then knocked down the windows and doors, including a garage door, to use non-lethal ways to get Komorowski to surrender.
However, Surprise Police, which has now taken over the investigation, said Komorowski came out of the house armed with a rifle and ran towards officers, who then fired their weapons, striking Komorowski. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman and juvenile in the home were not harmed. No officers or bystanders were harmed either in this incident.
This is the 40th officer-involved shooting in the Valley and the 67th statewide this year.
