The GBI will hold a 9 p.m. press conference to provide further details about Wednesday’s school shooting that killed four and injured nine others.
GBI officials and Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith held a press conference at 4:30 p.m. where they released the name of the killer. No names of victims were mentioned by the authorities as they said many aspects of the case were still ‘fluid’ and under investigation.

“This hits home for us being from Athens just down the road, Marty and I having a daughter who taught first grade just a few years ago. This is everybody’s worst nightmare. I just want to offer my sincerest condolences and our thoughts and prayers to the family’s who have lost loved ones.”

GBI director Chris Hosey said two teachers and two students died on Wednesday at Apalachee High School. Their names were not released. Nine others (Eight students, one teacher) were taken to various hospitals in north Georgia.
14-year-old male Colt Gray taken into custody
GBI Director Chris Hosey said 14-year-old Colt Gray was the shooter who turned himself over to resource officers once encountered. He was taken into custody and will be charged with murder as an adult. Hosey said he was a student at the school.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith speaks about tragic shooting at Apalachee High School
Appearing choked up as he began to speak, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith thanked the support of other authorities throughout the state.
“This hits home for me because I was born and raised here,” Smith began. “I went to school in this school system. My kids go to this school system. I’m proud of this school system. My heart hurts for these kids. My heart hurts for our community, but I want to make it very clear that hate will not prevail in this county. I want that to be very clear and known. Love will prevail over what happened today. I assure you of that.”
