North Bay Haven wrestler Bear Siegal was selected for the United States 17U team to compete in the International School Sports Federation Games in Manama, Bahrain later this year.

Students and athletes from135 nations will compete across 25 sports from Oct. 18-Nov. 1.

Siegal is one of two wrestlers selected from Florida, adding another accolade to his decorated career. He already has 150 varsity wins, is a two-time FHSAA district champion, a two-time Adidas Nationals All-American and three-time USA Wrestling Nationals qualifier.

He recently competed at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior & 16U Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota, and said he learned several strategies from his experience in the tournament.

“I will need to cut weight early and work hard because the other guys I will compete against are physical freaks of nature,” Siegal said. “My freshman year I was cutting from 160 to 145 every single week for the season, so I have more time this time around to properly cut weight.”

Seigal also is a starting linebacker and running back for the Buccaneers’ football team, which could counteract his weight loss goal in the latter parts of the season.

“I will wait until it is closer to tournament time to start cutting, but it shouldn’t affect my play ability because I am more of a speed linebacker who tries to avoid the big linemen and getting blocked,” Siegal said.

The junior participates in football practice five days a week and also includes wrestling training on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The tournament will be his first opportunity to travel outside the country.

“I am excited to see how the different cultures are and how different everything is compared to the United States,” Siegal said. “I am looking to win it all, celebrate and have fun.”
