Trinity football coach Jay Cobb discusses win over Frederick Douglass
Trinity football coach Jay Cobb discusses the Shamrocks’ victory, behind stout defense, in a 6A heavyweight bout over No. 4 Frederick Douglass.
Here’s a look at the top Louisville-area games to see in Week 3 of the Kentucky high school football season. All games are scheduled for Friday unless otherwise noted.
The Tigers, ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, cruised to a 37-7 victory over Central on Friday as junior Marlon Harbin rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries. Harbin has a team-high 150 rushing yards through two games and also is the team’s top receiver (nine catches, 128 yards, one TD). Junior quarterback Mason Trimble has completed 16 of 22 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns.
Male, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, knocked off Ballard 49-21 on Friday as junior Chayce Burton rushed for 214 yards and four touchdowns on 34 carries. The Bulldogs have used three different quarterbacks this season in senior Antonio Harris, junior Jordan Williams and sophomore Tyson Kinsel but have attempted just 16 passes against 69 runs.
St. X won last year’s meeting, 20-10.

Frederick Douglass, ranked No. 4 in Class 6A, will look to bounce back from Friday’s 23-13 loss to Trinity. The Broncos committed four turnovers and managed just 135 yards of offense. They continue to play without two of their top offensive stars in senior running back Peyton Smith and senior wide receiver Derion Talbert because of injuries. Coach Nathan McPeek expects both to return to action later this season.
Manual, ranked No. 5 in Class 6A, is 2-0 for the fourth straight year after rallying for a 21-7 victory over Central Hardin on Friday. Junior Gerian Traynor rushed for 68 yards and scored two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving). Sophomore Jeremy Presley added 45 rushing yards and a touchdown. This will be the first-ever meeting between the schools.
DeSales, ranked No. 9 in Class 4A, will look to bounce back from Friday’s 54-23 loss at North Oldham. The Colts’ defense allowed 458 yards, including 251 on the ground. Senior Da’Von Martin is a threat in the passing game (three touchdown catches) and on special teams (one punt return for a score). The Colts dropped a 24-23 overtime decision to KCD last year.
KCD, ranked No. 5 in Class A, got a forfeit victory over Carroll County on Friday. Carroll County canceled the game because several of its players were out with illness and injuries. The Bearcats dropped a 20-7 decision to Atherton in their season opener. Junior Parker Rudolph rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Center Grove posted a 28-14 victory over Fort Wayne (Indiana) Carroll on Friday as senior Austin Hennessy rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown. The game was called after two quarters because of weather. Tight end/slot receiver Dominick Barry is one of Indiana’s top recruits in the Class of 2026. Center Grove won last year’s meeting 34-7 on its way to reaching Indiana’s Class 6A state semifinals.
Trinity, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, got another strong performance from its defense in a 23-13 victory at Frederick Douglass on Friday. A week after posting five sacks in a 28-10 win at Bryan Station, the Shamrocks forced four turnovers in their win over Frederick Douglass. Junior end Keandre Thompson has been a leader with four tackles for loss, 2 ½ sacks and a fumble recovery.
Fern Creek rolled up 435 yards of offense in a 60-6 rout of Fairdale on Friday. The 60 points were the most for Fern Creek since a 62-33 victory over Bullitt East in the first round of the 2019 playoffs. Senior quarterback K.P. Passmore passed for 195 yards and two touchdowns, including two to senior tight end Patrick Carr. Senior Adrian Jackson rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Oldham County is 2-0 for the second straight season after blitzing Shelby County 50-0 on Friday. Junior Derek Dees passed for 221 yards and four touchdowns.
