4 things to do in Iowa City from farm strolls to Iowa Hawkeye history

The upcoming weekend in Iowa City is one of the most anticipated of the year as the University of Iowa Hawkeyes take on the Iowa State Cyclones at Kinnick Stadium.

The excitement and fun aren’t limited to Melrose Avenue. There are a multitude of events to enjoy before and after the game, from live music to hanging with Iowa icons.

Here are four things to do in Iowa City this weekend:

Friday Night Concert Series

The beginning of September brings the final rush of free summer programming in Iowa City. The Summer of the Arts Friday Night Concert Series runs until Sept. 20, with familiar and emerging artists performing on the Pedmall stage. Jumbies takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 6, bringing a high-energy set of Caribbean, Funk, and Afro-Cuban fusion rhythms that will transport the audience to a tropical paradise.

Hawkeye Histories

A new semester at the University of Iowa welcomes a new exhibit at the Main Library Gallery called “Hawkeye Histories.” Curated by Dr. Jennifer Sterling, the exhibit examines the role of sports in the late 1800s when collegiate athletics came to the University of Iowa. It also details the emergence of big-time men’s sports to the rise of women’s athletics in the 1970s.

“Hawkeye Histories” will be displayed throughout the fall semester until Dec. 19. The Main Library Gallery is open daily at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday and at 1 p.m. on the weekend, and is free and open to the public.

Once Upon a Time in The People’s Republic of Iowa City

Head to the James Theater to see “Once Upon a Time in The People’s Republic of Iowa City.” The play follows the events of a zombie apocalypse with Iowa City as the background. Desperate survivors run for their lives, battling the undead as they try to preserve Iowa City. Once Upon a Time in The People’s Republic of Iowa City has three shows Friday, Sept. 6 through Sunday, Sept. 8. Tickets are pay-what-you-can.

Sanctuary Stroll

Escape the bustle of Iowa City and join the community at Oxford on a visit to the Iowa Farm Sanctuary. Meet the rescued animals from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, and hear their stories while exploring a scenic unpaved walking trail. Sunday’s event will feature the recently rescued PHill, the water buffalo who made headlines last week. The weekly event promotes a sense of community, with guests encouraged to bring picnic food. The excursion will cost $12 for adults, which will be donated directly to The Iowa Farm Sanctuary.
