Not one but two Texas neighborhoods were ranked among the 16 most “up-and-coming” neighborhoods in the U.S., according to an analysis by TravelMag.

Govalle in Austin and Deep Ellum in Dallas were both recognized among the country’s most appealing districts.

From cattle ranch to artist studios: Govalle in Austin

Govalle is located in East Austin between Webberville Road and Airport Boulevard, north of the Colorado River. Its name means “good grazing” in Swedish, as the area owes its roots to Swedish culture. Swedes took up cattle ranching in the nineteenth century before Govalle grew into one of Austin’s coolest spots.

Today, Govalle is home to various bars and eateries, including Holiday, which was awarded Best Bar of 2023 by Eater Austin. TravelMag also notes Hi Sign Brewing, Bambino and Lil Easy Fine Cajun Food & Bar. In addition to these, Govalle also claims Canopy, an artist community featuring 89 studios, some galleries and offices, and a coffee shop. Austin Bouldering Project is a unique fitness center with 50,000 square feet of space dedicated to climbing as well as strength and conditioning, barre, Vinyasa and Vin/Yin classes.

A name rich in history and culture: Deep Ellum in Dallas

Three hours north of Govalle is Deep Ellum, the other up-and-coming neighborhood that made TravelMag’s list. Located in the heart of Dallas, this neighborhood features a trio of giant robot sculptures called “The Traveling Man.” One of the structures, aptly called “Walking Tall,” greets visitors at a height of 40 feet.

“The Traveling Man-Walking Tall” is one of a trio of structures throughout the Deep Ellum neighborhood in Dallas.

Even before becoming a National Historic District in 2023, Deep Ellum held much historical and cultural significance as Dallas’ first commercial district for African Americans and European immigrants. The area has ties to blues and jazz, and it was the destination of two Texas railroads in the 1800s. Deep Ellum initially referred to the activity around Elm Street, and it was its early residents’ pronunciation of the street that gave it the name recognized today.

The Dallas neighborhood, just east of downtown, features shops, art galleries and theaters, 25 live music venues and over 100 bars and restaurants. Reflecting the diversity of past and present residents, Deep Ellum offers a variety of culinary choices “from Hawkers, an eatery inspired by Asian street food stalls, to Terry Black’s BBQ to Local, an upscale mainstay in the Boyd Hotel presenting a la carte options and a multi-course tasting menu with wine pairings,” TravelMag reports. Like Eater Austin’s praise of Govalle, Eater Dallas has named Deep Ellum one of the city’s best food neighborhoods.

What does ‘up-and-coming’ mean, anyway?

In compiling the list of the most “up-and-coming” neighborhoods in the U.S., TravelMag curated a list of 16 within major cities using specific criteria. The criteria ranged from recent openings of “cool cocktail bars, fancy coffee houses and trending eateries” to “eclectic boutiques,” vegan restaurants and LGTBQ+ friendly spots.

The publication classified the neighborhoods as “hip districts” rather than the trendiest. The main demographic moving to these districts is young professionals seeking studio flats or one-bedroom apartments. As a result of this shift, several of these areas are seeing an influx of new development, as well as higher rent compared to other neighborhoods in the same city.
