Less than 24 hours after winning his first Paralympic title at Stade de France, Ezra Frech weaved the magic again, this time on the field.
The 19-year-old from USA soared to victory again – in front of a deafening crowd, that had his family and friends – when he leaped 1.94 metres for a new Paralympic record in men’s high jump T63 final, on Tuesday evening (3 September). Frech was closely followed by India’s Sharad Kumar – who also eventually finished with a Paralympic record in T42 and the silver – in a tight contest.
French, who clinched the men’s T63 100m gold a day ago, had began a social media countdown of becoming a Paralympic Games champion and it was fulfilled on Tuesday evening (4 September).
“I’m definitely happy to have completed the countdown. People keep telling me I’m putting too much pressure on myself. People were saying, ‘Why don’t you just count down to the Paralympic Games, not count down until you win, as what happens if you don’t win?’
“I say that would be me admitting any ounce of insecurity. There wasn’t.
“I believe I was put here on this earth to normalise disability, change perceptions about what is possible as an amputee, winning back-to-back golds, leading the Paralympic movement until 2028.”
Blackwell’s second world record
Paris 2024 has been an incredible Games for Jaydin Blackwell so far – he clinched his second Paralympic gold with another world record show. Blackwell crossed the finish line in an impressive 48.49 ahead of his fellow sprinter Ryan Medrano in a one-two finish for USA in men’s 400m T38. This was also the second one-two finish for the USA duo after the men’s 100m T38 final.
“I’m glad, appreciative and really excited that I’ve been able to do this twice in a row now. I’m really happy that I’ve got the abilities to do what I need to do on that track and get two golds.”
“I’m trying to push him. I’m just glad that I got to race with him, every time we get to race. It’s just a little funny competition, nothing more,” Blackwell said on his competition with Medrano.
In other results, Azerbaijan’s Lamiya Valiyeva won her first women’s 100m T13 Paralympic gold with a world record effort of 11.76.
Meanwhile, the 42-year-old Brazilian Jerusa Geber dos Santos added her first Paralympic gold – only title missing from her glittering cabinet – when she and her guide Gabriel Aparecido dos Santos Garcia ran the women’s 100m – T11 in 11.83. Jerusa has broke the world record in the qualification.
Netherlands’ Kimberly Alkemade made a triumphant return to the country that has brought her so much personal tragedy by being crowned a Paris 2024 Paralympic Games champion.
“It is now a special city for me. Twenty-six years ago I lost my mother and my leg in France and now I am back here through the power of sport to turn something so bad into something good – to see how much power I have now through sport,” said Alkemade after winning the women’s 200m T64 final gold – her first Paralympic gold.
