Clean energy is a critical and growing part of Alabama’s energy and economic future. Governor Kay Ivey’s recent proclamation designating September 23–27 as National Clean Energy Week recognizes the immense potential clean energy has to not only power Alabama homes and businesses more sustainably, but also to create jobs, spur economic growth, and improve quality of life in communities across the state.
As Governor Ivey’s proclamation suggests, the clean energy sector is a potential economic powerhouse for Alabama. As the second-largest producer of hydropower east of the Rocky Mountains and the fifth-largest generator of nuclear power in the country, Alabama’s growing clean energy industry has already created more than 44,000 jobs in the Yellowhammer State, according to the Governor.
National Clean Energy Week is also a good reminder that investing in clean energy will help create even more jobs for hardworking Alabamans. At the same time, such investments will help Alabama attract new businesses and industries, particularly as more and more companies look to relocate or establish themselves in states that boast both business- and climate-friendly policies.
For businesses, it’s a good thing to have Governor Ivey in Montgomery working to advance policies that ensure we are growing our clean energy economy and workforce. Hopefully, in Congress, Senator Katie Boyd Britt will follow the Governor’s lead and help pass thoughtful clean energy solutions and policies in Washington that support and secure a stronger, cleaner, and more economically vibrant future for communities throughout Alabama and across the country.
