A look at the money game on the road to Vermont’s Campaign 2024

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – New data shows where Vermont political candidates draw their support and how much campaign firepower they have heading into the fall.

Money isn’t everything in a race but it does allow candidates to spend on ads and mailers to get their message out.

In the race for governor, incumbent Republican Gov. Phil Scott has raised $37,112, spent $22,618 and still has $378,818 left in the bank.

His Democratic challenger, Esther Charlestin, has raised $4,505.04, spent $2,557.35 and appears to have no funds left on hand.

In the race for lieutenant governor, incumbent Progressive-Democrat David Zuckerman has raised $13,760.90 and spent $38,893.06. He has about $43,000 on hand.

His challenger, former-Democrat-turned-Republican John Rodgers, has raised $18,660.00, spent $24,105.12 and has about $15,000 on hand.

One thing of note this year is the data shows that in a lot of the political action, particularly down-ballot Senate races, the money is flowing into several Republican candidates.

For example, in the race for the Grand Isle state Senate seat previously held by the late Sen. Dick Mazza, Republican Pat Brennan has raised $9,497, spent over $10,000 and has about $23,000 on hand. Democrat Andy Julow, who was appointed to fill Mazza’s seat, raised about $2,200, spent $2,200 and has about $4,500 on hand. It remains to be seen how voters will respond because Mazza was in office for years.

But money doesn’t mean everything; longtime TV anchor Stewart Ledbetter raised more than $68,000 in the primary– a huge amount for a state Senate race– and still lost.

The Vermont Secretary of State’s Office will start mailing out ballots for the November election in about three weeks.
