Johnston native Joe Mazzulla, Boston Celtics honored at Rhode Island State House

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — Rhode Island on Tuesday celebrated the NBA-champion Boston Celtics along withhead coach and Johnston’s own Joe Mazzulla at a State House event.

Mazzulla led the Boston Celtics to the team’s 18th NBA Championship.

Mazzulla came down the State House steps, clutching the NBA Championship trophy along with Celtics owner and Narragansett summer resident Steve Pagliuca.

They came at the invitation of Gov. Dan McKee.

The reception was as much for the Celtics franchise’s accomplishment as it was for the job Rhode Island’s Mazzulla did leading the team to the championship.

Mazzulla spoke about how this opportunity has given him a chance to reconnect with his Rhode Island roots.

“One of the greatest gifts that I think God has given me is being able to come back to where I’m from and redeveloping those relationships, having an understanding,” Mazzulla said.

Mazzulla met with a long line of fans who were eager for a photo with the trophy and the Rhode Islander who helped lead the team to the title. The Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks in last season’s NBA finals.

Mazzulla played basketball at Bishop Hendricken High School.
