US Open Quarterfinal Showdown Looms

New York, Sep 2 (EFE).- Italian Jannik Sinner has set up a quarterfinal showdown against Russian Daniil Medvedev after defeating home favorite Tommy Paul in the fourth round of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday.

The Sinner-Medvedev encounter promises an early final in the US Open quarterfinals, with neither Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz nor Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the mix.

World No. 1 Sinner and Medvedev, ranked fifth in the ATP and the 2022 US Open champion, will face off in an explosive duel of racket giants (Sinner stands 1.91 meters tall, while Medvedev is 1.98 meters) for a place in the semifinals of the New York Grand Slam.

Their paths to this tantalizing clash were vastly different.

Medvedev cruised past Portugal’s Nuno Borges (No. 34) with a commanding 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 victory in just one hour and 51 minutes.

In contrast, Sinner had to battle through very hard, especially in the first two sets, to overcome American Tommy Paul (No. 14), eventually winning a thrilling match 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-1 in two hours and 42 minutes.

Paul started strong with a double break and a 4-1 lead in the first set, but Sinner rallied to avoid the upset in the final match of the evening session at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Sinner and Medvedev have faced each other 12 times earlier, with the Russian leading 7-5. However, the Italian won their most significant encounter—the final of this year’s Australian Open.

In 2023 alone, they’ve met in four more finals: Rotterdam and Miami (both wins for Medvedev) and Beijing and Vienna (both wins for Sinner).

On the same side of the draw, Australian Álex de Miñaur (No. 10) and Briton Jack Draper (No. 25) advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating fellow Australian Jordan Thompson (No. 32) and Czech Tomas Machac (No. 39), respectively.

Swiatek Challenges Pegula
In the women’s competition, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, the world No. 1, defeated Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova (No. 16) 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 30 minutes.

Awaiting her in the quarterfinals is American Jessica Pegula (No. 6), who also triumphed over Russian Diana Shnaider (No. 18) 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 28 minutes.

Of their nine previous encounters, Swiatek leads with six wins, while Pegula has three victories. However, Pegula is in excellent form, having won her second consecutive WTA 1000 title in Canada in August, reached the final of the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati, and won 13 of her last 14 matches.

The survivor of their quarterfinal will face the winner of the match between Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia (No. 21), who defeated Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki (No. 71), and Czech Karolina Muchova (No. 52), who overcame Italy’s Jasmine Paolini (No. 5).
