LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A Mid-Michigan native has earned a historic silver medal at the Paris Paralympic Games. Saint Johns native Jayci Simon, 19, and her playing partner Miles Krajewski, also 19, earned the silver medal but fell to China in the gold medal match early Monday.
China took home gold in the mixed doubles SH6 event by winning the match two games to none (21-14, 21-12).
Simon and Krajewski made history as the first Team USA badminton Paralympians to compete and Monday the pair earned the first medals in history for Team USA in badminton at the Paralympics.
Now a Lansing Community College Student, Simon grew up training with a portable net at a church in Saint Johns until training full time with Krajewski this summer in Frisco, Texas.
The Mid-Michigan native began playing badminton in 2016 when she was just 11 years old. She would create her own workouts and had her parents help in her training by throwing her shuttlecocks. Simon has also gained valuable experience playing with the recreational badminton club at Michigan State University.
News 10 first reported on Jayci Simon and her athletic accomplishments in 2019 when she was training and hoping to one day represent Team USA at an event like the Paralympics.
