Illinois Valley Yacht Club raising money for Alzheimer’s Association

PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (WMBD) — It’s not unusual to see boats at the Ivy Club in Peoria Heights, however it is unusual to see boats made out of cardboard. The club raised money for Alzheimer’s Disease by hosting their annual cardboard boat race.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disease affecting nearly seven million Americans, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Drew Vicary and his family friends decided to craft a flat surface boat. They won first place, without losing sight on the real prize.

“Going as fast, as hard as I possibly could. Getting the farthest, too. Just doing my best to be first, trying to try to get people out here to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s. So we just wanted to do the best that all of us could,” said Vicary.

Along with first, second and third place awards, There’s even a “Titanic Award” for the boat unable to stay afloat.

Chairman Tim Ward said raising money and awareness for Alzheimer’s hits close to home for many Ivy Club members.

“Alzheimer’s is a really tough disease. It’s not only so hard on the patient, but it’s so hard on the family and everybody’s friends. And it just kind of sinks into your heart. And at our club, we’ve lost some really good members from Alzheimer’s. So we want to give back. We want to do everything we can to find a cure for this,” said Ward.

He said the Ivy Club has raised more than $50,000 for the Central Illinois chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association in the past decade.
